General Description: Savory is an annual herb, Satureja hotenis, belonging to the mint family. Its dark-green, narrow leaves are dried and crushed. It has a clean, piney fragrance and peppery flavor.

Uses: Savory is best known as a flavoring for beans. It is also used to enhance the flavor of soups, vegetables, stuffing’s, cabbage, eggs, and sauerkraut.

History: Savory was popular with the Romans as an ingredient before pepper was introduced. It was also used as an aphrodesiac and treatment for bee stings. When it was introduced in England it became a favorite spice for flavoring stuffing.
